Whether your website is old or new, backlinks can play a major part in its success. When it comes to analysing their site using tools such as Google Analytics, many site owners become disheartened when they see that visitors numbers aren’t as high as they’d like.
However, with a little time, though and effort, rectifying this situation is extremely easy- especially when you concentrate on building and improving backlinks.
It goes without saying that you’ll want relevant banklinks which will result in return visits, so as tempting as it may be, don’t just opt for unrelated links which are easy to build- concentrate on quality.
Backlinks are a great way of propelling your site to the dizzy heights of the Google search results, although it goes without saying that it isn’t the quickest or easiest of tasks.
However, before working on implementing a decent backlinking strategy, you do need to ensure that your site is fit for purpose.
Even though you might gain more visitors through your backlinking campaign, they’ll be clicking on the ‘back’ button on their browser in seconds if your site is difficult to navigate, full of useless or outdated content, or poorly designed.
So don’t rush your backlinking campaign- make sure the basics are in place first.
Many people complain about a lack of links- even when they know that they haven’t spent adequate time building them.
Links don’t just magically appear overnight, and you need to set time aside to to build quality links which will provide results.
Simply spending half an hour here and there building links which have no relevance to your site will almost definitely not help your rankings, so make an effort to allocate sufficient time to enhancing your site with links which will benefit you in the long term.
Don’t think that you can get away with half-hearted link building- you can’t.
If you have owned a business or you already own one then you already have a good idea for link building for your website. Why? It’s like a business!!
In the beginning, it takes a lot of time and effort to build quality links for a websites in the same way it is to start a business and run it in the initial period.
Once you start to gain you initial lot of links then you will notice that slowly but slowly you rate of new links is on the increase. get it wrong in the beginning then say good bye like a business!
The major search engines have stressed over and over again about the importance of good quality links over a good quantity of links.
This is very important to rank high in the search engines – especially the big three – Google, Bing and Yahoo.
Although they do not say the quantity does not benefit at all and try and move aware from this. I am quite confident that having many low quality links as well as high quality ones is very important to rank high. This said, Link farms are a no no. Don’t submit your site to them as these can get you penalised in the search engins.
Is it true that links from social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Google Buzz and the many hundred other ones count as quality backlinks to a website? No, this isn’t true.
The main reason why this is not true is because if it did matter, then each and every user of these social media would spam the heck out of these sites and start to link like crazy back to their hundred’s and thousands of sites a million times!
Yes, crazy as it may sound but it’s true.
Exception. If the backlink on Twitter comes from a very reputable user, then this may have positive effect on rankings!
Many people are under the impression that only Google places relevance on backlinks whereas the other search engines such as Yahoo and Bing do not. This, as many of you will be aware is not true and all the three major search engines take backlinks into account.
However there is a difference between the search engines.
Google is known to place a lot more relevence on backlinks where as Bing is a little less and Yahoo are different.
Could this be the Key as to why Google is top of the list for search engines? Nah, I don’t think so because Bing is catching up quick, very quick!
If you spend a very large amount of time on your website and design an exceptional design which ends up looking prestigious. This will naturally attract hundreds and thousands of high quality PR links to your homepage over time and this will go on increasing!
It is a lot of hard work and worth spending months of work. Look at N Design Studio for example, he spent a very large amount of time but now his natural links go on increasing. Can you complain?
So go on and design yourself a ace website and then you can sit back and see the number of links for your site on the increase!
Link building is one of those activities which is usually frowned upon by Google, to varying degrees. Typically if you are paying for links, Google doesn’t like it much. If you are building links through active means but without payment, then usually that is OK. Google’s own guidelines follow the “if you build it, they will link it” rule – meaning that you should concentrate on making good content, a usable site and inevitably you will see more links coming your way.
All of this is easier than it sounds, though. Making a site linkworthy is an elusive art, but there are a few tips to help you on your way:
- Don’t fill your site with ads. You may want to make money, but users are no more receptive to being bombarded with ads on the internet than they are in the street. If you’re the kind of person who thinks that at least 50% of the visible portion of a page should be used for adverts, you’re barking up the wrong tree.
- Post content regularly, or at the least evenly. By this I mean don’t write 10 blog posts and have them all come out over 10 days in sequence. Spread them out for your more busy periods when you won’t be posting content. This will keep people coming back as they will come to expect this regularity from your site. This will help build links, too.
- Don’t just copy another article and shift a few words around. Write original content for your site even if it is about a topic being talked about across a huge variety of sites. Take the Apple iPad for instance – there will be thousands of blog posts about it by now but the ones which stand out are the original ones, and standing out will get you links.
I will be talking about this more in the future, but I think it is something important for website owners to pay attention to. The days of gaming the system are now starting to fade, meaning you will have to work hard to get your site to the top.
Linkscape, the SEOmoz link spider, has found a new lease of life it would seem. Already an invaluable tool to SEO specialists and link builders worldwide, the announcement of the Open Site Explorer shows their intent to take this vast data resource to the next level.
Essentially, the tool makes it incredibly simple to deal with the data Linkscape offers. Information relating to the key measures most website owners would be interested in is now even easier to access, along with an amazing set of tools to help you filter through the masses of links that Linkscape has spidered relating to your site.
SEOmoz are showing themselves to be very committed to this project, and with the possible lack of Yahoo’s Site Explorer soon due to the Bing deal, they could well end up at the forefront of the analytics market outside of Google (if they aren’t there already!)
